George asks…

How long to develop heartburn symptoms?

I would like to determine which foods or drinks trigger my heartburn. Generally, for people who suffer from heartburn, after eating or drinking a trigger food, when I would expect heartburn symptoms? For example, 1 hour later after eating or 3 hours?

Yes I am also taking prilosec, but it has not been sufficient so I need to adjust my diet.

Nutritionatlast answers:

As part of your diet for GERD, you may want to avoid:

•Fried and fatty foods
•Chocolate
•Peppermint
•Tomato products
•Foods and drinks that contain caffeine
•Alcoholic beverages.

Coffee and alcohol actually stimulate your stomach to make more acid than usual. Alcohol, chocolate, and fatty foods are believed to cause the lower esophageal sphincter to weaken. The combination of too much stomach acid and a weak lower esophageal sphincter can increase the symptoms of GERD.

Other foods can make your symptoms worse. These include:

•Garlic
•Onions
•Carbonated beverages, such as soda
•Mustard
•Certain spices
•Vinegar
•Citrus fruits and juices.

I also find digestive enzymes help for me and to really chew your food more before swallowing. I would also raise the head of your bed six inches. For me, the tomato sauce is the worst.
